Drama

At Old Buckenham Hall Drama is a highly valued subject that holds an important place within the school curriculum.

Drama is taught by a specialist drama teacher and every form in the school, from Nursery to Form 8, is timetabled 35 minutes of Drama a week.

Drama is ‘a rehearsal for life’. It is not simply ‘learning how to act’ but a means of giving form to the kinds of knowledge and experience that are not available to the child in any other way. The children are encouraged to work together in small or large groups, often as a whole class, where the emphasis is on openness, tolerance and mutual understanding. This leads to the practice of personal, social and communication skills.

Drama provides obvious vehicles for conversation and spoken language and the children are encouraged to share, explore and articulate their ideas. They can be helped to question their own attitudes and those of others within a controlled and supportive atmosphere, thus broadening and deepening their understanding of others.

Play productions, poetry recitals, theatre visits and other drama projects provided opportunities for looking at written material, thus encouraging reading, research and observation.

Performing to an audience is an important part of Drama and every child in the school is involved in at least one theatrical production a year.

Children can choose to take Speech and Drama lessons as an extra- curricular subject. These lessons involve preparing for Drama Festivals and Guildhall Speech and Drama examinations.

Recent productions include ‘Jack and Snow White’, ‘The Bossy Christmas Fairy’, ‘The Battle of Britain’ and ‘The Pied Piper’.
