March, 2015:

This weekends Masquerade Ball

What a fantastic time the children had at our Masquerade Ball this weekend!!

Ampton Point to Point

After a hearty breakfast, Mrs. Campbell, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Turner, Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. Riddleston joined the boarders to head off to Ampton Point to Point.

Emma Buckle was racing in one of the pony races and was given some very vocal support while she paraded round the Paddock.  Emma rode gamely round the course but came through after the first three.

The rest of the afternoon was spent betting on all the races with the OBH sweetie tote.  Form was studied carefully and bets placed!  Some of the girls went behind the scenes to see the jockeys weigh-in and how each race is organised.

Mr. O’Sullivan joined the group later in the afternoon and presented the prize to the owner of the winning horse in the Open Maiden Race that OBH sponsored.  To everyone’s delight, the winning owner happened to be Caspar Boyce’s grandfather!

U13A Girls Netball Success

What an amazing day out.  The girls lost their first match 4-6 in a disappointing display against strong club opposition.  I think they were struggling after the 2.5 hour journey to St Hugh’s.  After that we played St Hugh’s A team and were equally disappointing in the first half losing 0-5.  From this point there was not stopping us.  We overhauled St Hugh’s and actually overcame the deficit and won 8-6 in a fantastic display of confident, quick netball.  The remaining group matches were won 12-1, 11-0 and 8-5.

We had qualified for the main event – The Cup Final against the first team played in the first round and lost two.  We were a little nervous but all the pressure was on Horncastle Belles who were the favourites.  In a tight first half we were quite cautious, but managed to stay focused and won convincingly in the end 9-5 to hoist the trophy.  A great day for the girls and a real indication of how far they have come over the last 2 years.

It was a very proud moment for me!

Boys IAPS Plate Winners

On Monday the boys 1st VII competed in the IAPS hockey tournament at Bishop Stortford. In our group we had St Anthony’s, Bishop Stortford, Chigwell and Beeston Hall, and we would have to finish in the top two to go through to the quarter-finals of the main competition. We played St Anthony’s first and beat them, but then came up against Chigwell who got the better of us beating us before meeting Bishop Stortford, who after some sterling defending by our boys won the game with two late goals, which puts our bid to qualify for the National finals out of reach.

We then concentrated on our next aim, which was to win the Plate competition. We faced Kings Cambridge in the quarter-finals, which we won putting us into the semi-finals against Barnardiston who we had previously lost to earlier in the season. This time the boys played some outstanding hockey beating them by two goals to one which meant that we would face Brandeston in the final.  This was always going to be a tight match but after going one nil up in the second half we thought we could hang on but Brandeston came back strongly and equalised with a few minutes to go. 0BH would be involved in another penalty shuffle competition this time for the trophy.

It was a very tense time but the OBH boys stayed calm and converted all three of their shuffles winning the Plate final. Credit must go to the entire squad, a real team performance with everyone contributing.

Ampton Point to Point

All the boarders are looking forward to going to the Ampton Point to Point on Sunday where OBH will be sponsoring the Open Maiden Race and Best Turned Out.  We will also be supporting Emma Buckle who will be riding in one of the Pony races, as well as her brother who will be racing later in the day.

If any parents are planning to attend do come and say hello!

Charlie Buckle

Former pupil and brother to Emma Buckle, Charlie Buckle has been clocking up more success at recent point to points.  At Higham in February 2015, he won Best Rider of the Month, seen here being presented his cup.
