The Foundation Stage

The purpose built Nursery is to be found in the Pre-Prep Department of the school. Well equipped, light and spacious, the children enjoy a friendly and stimulating environment in which they are encouraged to achieve and develop their potential in preparation for entry into the Reception class.

The secure surroundings of the Walled Garden provide the perfect outdoor play area which has been furnished particularly for our very youngest members of the school.

The Nursery provides a rich variety of opportunities through which the children develop independence and confidence. The Foundation Stage curriculum is based on learning through play, talk and new experiences covering the seven areas of learning and development: Personal, Social and Emotional development; Physical development; Communication and language; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design. Our themes are fun and relevant to the children’s experiences.

Children can enter the Nursery from the age of two years eight months. The school participates in the Early Education Grant vouchers for children between the ages of three and five. The Reception class aims to create a happy, active and stimulating environment which is conducive to learning.

Specialist subject teachers visit regularly from the Prep school to teach the children subjects such as Music, Drama and PE. By the end of the year the children will have the necessary skills and understanding that will enable them to progress with their learning as they move on to Year 1.

The Early Years Foundation Stage provision in the Nursery and Reception classes is fully inclusive with the children learning through rich experiences and activities both in and out of the classroom. There are plenty of opportunities for parents to talk to the class teacher about their children; something we encourage!
