Boarding is at the Heart of OBH

Boarding is the physical and mental heart of Old Buckenham Hall—it runs directly through our school's DNA. Set within OBH's historic main building, our boarding houses are far from an institutional environment; they are a bustling, warm country home where dorms have been thoughtfully styled by country interior designers with vibrant patterns, curated artwork, and comfortable beds! Merton is the boys' Boarding House and Lodge and Spero are the girls' Boarding Houses. There are common rooms in each boarding house filled with games, puzzles, and books. Children are grouped together by age in dorms and the configuration of room sharers is altered each term. 

Deciding to board is a big step for any family, but at OBH, it is never about 'sending your child away.' It is about extending their childhood playground. We intentionally maintain a blend of local children, military boarders, and a small number of international boarders to foster a genuinely immersive, supportive British family experience.

A Family-Centred Community

The boarding house is a true community. The Head of Boarding lives on-site with his family, taking direct responsibility for the overall welfare and day-to-day wellbeing of the pupils. The Headmaster, his family, and several other residential members of staff, including our Gap Assistants, also live within our grounds, creating a secure, supportive, and extended family atmosphere.

An Unhurried, Screen-Free Childhood

Modern life moves fast, but inside our 85-acre grounds, childhood slows down. We offer a phone-free country childhood where pupils willingly trade screens for climbing trees, riding bikes, playing tennis, practicing cricket, and racing on our woodland 'pump' track—a facility our boarders constructed alongside the Headmaster!

As one of our boarders put it when asked about smartphones:

"Why would I want one? I’d rather be on my bike."

Magical Traditions & Opportunities Pupils Never Forget

Life at OBH is defined by cherished, magical rituals and unique opportunities for our boarders.

Birthdays: If a student is boarding on their birthday, a special birthday table is arranged for them at supper where they can invite friends to join them at their table to celebrate over their supper of choice! A birthday wouldn't be complete without cake – our boarders choose their preferred birthday cake which is then made in house for them by our talented chefs!
 
Fireside: A beloved Christmas tradition where boarders gather by the fireplace in pyjamas and dressing gowns for a modern twist on a Victorian parlour night, games, hot chocolate, and self-prepared skits performed by boarders and residential staff alike. It is a magical night full of warmth and laughter.

The Secret Sweet Cupboard: Movie nights are made unforgettable when a secret wood-panelled door in the Headmaster’s study slides back to reveal the legendary secret sweet cupboard!

Morning Opportunities: Each morning, boarders have the opportunity to enjoy dedicated practice time for their instruments under the guidance of our Director of Performing Arts. On Friday mornings, boarders lace up their trainers for cross-country club—voluntarily joined by 25% of the school. These opportunities help our boarders naturally build self-motivation, healthy habits, and quiet confidence before the school day even begins.

Boarding Options at OBH

We make it simple and natural for children (and parents) to grow into boarding. Whilst many pupils join us as boarders others start as day pupils and ask to join the house once they see their friends enjoying boarding life. We help support pupils and their families try boarding through regular boarding taster nights and flexible options to suit each pupil and their family.

At Old Buckenham Hall we offer Full Boarding, Weekly Boarding and a Flexi-Boarding option which enables pupils to stay at OBH for between 2 to 3 nights a week. 

A Day in the life of a Boarder

Life in the boarding house follows a happy, familiar rhythm. 

Morning Routine
Wake-Up: The boarding team gently wakes the house up. Boarders dress smartly for the school day, tidy their dorm spaces, and head down together before heading for optional daily music practice or cross-country run club on a Friday morning.

Breakfast: Pupils enjoy a nutritious selection of hot meals, cereals, juices, and toast in the dining room, where we place a strong emphasis on good table manners and positive social interaction to start the day.

Ready for the Day: Pupils head straight from breakfast to their form rooms ready for registration.

Evenings
After afternoon lessons and prep, Matrons welcome boarders back upstairs to switch out of school uniform and change into comfortable home clothes.

Supper & Activities: Residential staff join boarders for supper, followed by structured, fun evening activities that make full use of our 85-acre grounds and facilities.

Bedtime & Wind-Down
Lights Out: Staggered by age group, pupils enjoy hot toast, milk, and fruit in the dining room before heading upstairs for showers, quiet reading, and catch-ups with friends before lights out.

Weekend Adventures

Weekends at OBH offer the perfect balance of adventure and downtime. Our boarding team listen closely to our boarders to plan trips they genuinely want to experience.

• Cultural Excursions: Punting along the River Cam in historic city of Cambridge, climbing the iconic roof of The O2 in London, attending professional sporting matches such as Football or Rugby or discovering the magic of the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
• Suffolk Coast & Countryside: Enjoying fish-and-chip suppers by the sea in Aldeburgh and Southwold, crabbing, beach games, and woodland walks.
• Restorative Downtime: Time on campus to recharge, ride bikes around the grounds, play chess, enjoy arts and crafts or watch a movie together.

Staying in contact with your child

Old Buckenham Hall is a proudly phone-free school and has been for over 150 years. We believe that an exceptional boarding experience is built on a strong relationship between children, staff and parents. Our boarding team is always available to parents, and we welcome calls and emails to share progress and achievements.  

How to Contact Your Child (School Lines) 
Because we are a phone-free school, we provide reliable contact methods through the school's own infrastructure. All pupils have daily access to school telephones to call home, as well as access to their school email accounts each evening. We also encourage traditional letters and parcels, which are delivered directly to the boarding houses every day.

Mobile phones are not permitted at school, with one strictly managed exception: 
International pupils with family living overseas may bring a mobile phone to school solely for staying in touch with family across different time zones. These devices are kept locked away securely by the boarding staff at all times. They are only issued during designated, supervised calling windows and are collected immediately afterward. These phones may only be used for direct family communication (via apps like WhatsApp or WeChat). 

Boarding at OBH doesn't separate parents from school life. Parents are always warmly invited to join us for afternoon matches, concerts, plays, and all other school events.
